Four new bridges
Elegant design of Stadtbahn viaduct
skip: Elegant design of Stadtbahn viaductThe Stadtbahn line (section through the City) in the area of Berlin Hauptbahnhof was moved southwards from its original location and now runs across the newly-built bridges for a distance of about one kilometre. These bridges cross the new station hall at a height of some ten metres. Two S-Bahn and four long-distance tracks, one S-Bahn and two long-distance platforms were located on the four parallel Stadtbahn bridges. The 240-metre long Humboldthafen Bridge is at the eastern end of the new Stadtbahn line. From a width of thirty-nine metres at its eastern end, it flares out to a width of 66 metres at the western end to increase the number of tracks from four to six in the station area.

Elegant design for the bridge section of the Stadtbahn viaduct
A very elegant design was chosen for the bridge section of the Stadtbahn viaduct. The slim concrete superstructure sections rest on countless steel tube supports. For the first time, supports made of a combination of rolled and cast steel were used - on the Humboldthafen Bridge, for example, or on the eight 23-metre high forked supports, which are visible in the centre of the station hall. Where single steel tubes of the bridge construction are connected to one another, cast joints, heads or forks are used. This was the only way of achieving such a delicate supporting construction. Another benefit of using cast steel is that it reacts well to dynamic loads.

570-metre long bridge for norh-south traffic travelling to Gesundbrunnen
Another bridge was built at the northern exit of Hauptbahnhof for north-south traffic travelling to Gesundbrunnen. The line connecting the north-south line with Berlin's inner rail ring is about one kilometre long. A 570-metre long, six to twelve-metre high, bow-shaped, double-track railway bridge spans the Perleberger Bridge, the Berlin-Spandau Canal, Mettmann Park and Tegeler Straße.
