The construction of the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a logistics masterpiece

While constructing the excavation pits, groundwater levels were constantly monitored, bridges were built while operations continued, and 1.5 million cubic metres of soil removed by barge, which would otherwise have resulted in a 1,300 km long convoy of trucks.

Arched structures

Spectacular manoeuvre – arches lowered over Stadtbahn line

The top sections of the four 70-metre high towers were lowered like the arms of a bascule bridge to form an arch. The only difference - they remain locked in place.

East-west roof

High-tech construction of the modern age

Composed of panes of glass, none of which resemble one another, the glass roof was completed in a record time of just four months. A total of 85 kilometres of steel cable holds the roof secure in wind and weather.

Track and rail technology

Ballastless track has tracks embedded in concrete

During investigations to determine how vibrations in nearby buildings could be most effectively eliminated, the most favoured solution turned out to be a mass-spring system.

Excavation sites

Nine excavation pits constructed without lowering the groundwater table

On an area covering 90,000 m², excavation pits were constructed with diaphragm walls and an underwater concrete base slab, for which divers were required.

Exhaust stack

Tallest structure at the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof

Visible for miles around, the exhaust stack rises high above the rooftops of the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof.

Bridges and viaducts

Elegant design of Stadtbahn viaduct

A combination of rolled and cast steel was used for the first time to construct the steel tube supports on which the slim concrete superstructure sections rest.

Environment and logistics

Groundwater level checked at 100 measuring points every hour

Exemplary environmental care during the construction of the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof – Lehrter Bahnhof. Due to the excellent links to the waterways, large quantities of debris, for example, were removed from the site by barge.

Technical services

Installations concealed behind walls and ceilings

Facility installations of the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof include panorama lifts, over 50 escalators, fire extinguisher lines and many kilometres of cables.
